Borrowed Time, Precious Time

One-Shot Story

I was born in a world full of beauty, yet, my life has always been darkness.  I had a family. A mother, a father, a brother and a sister. It wasn't like I wasn't loved by anyone. Everyone loves me. Despite all of the love I received, I still felt alone and unsatisfied with my life. My siblings told me that the world isn't that great as I imagined. So does that mean I'm living in a world of my own fantasy?

The sounds of cars zooming by, the birds chirping loudly, the rhythm of classical musics, and most importantly, the tick tock from a clock. All of these noises fascinated me. The cars reminds me of the urbanize cities where people of all shapes and sizes walked on land. The birds reminds me of the feeling of freedom. Oh how great it must be to be able to soar high into the sky. The classical music's rhythm would put me into a deep slumber of heaven. The clock was the only thing that reminds me of the reason why I am still here today. Tick Tock.

One thing I learned in life was that life goes on whether I'm unhappy or happy. People from all over the world is still finding happiness, pursuing a career of their choice, getting an education, and having families while I'm sitting here, rotting my life away. I try not to be so negative but I find it impossible to see the light at the end of the tunnel. That wasn't until I met a stranger.

I was at a train station that day. It was snowing. I had to head home before the storm comes. A stranger, who was in a rush, bumped into me. "I'm sorry miss! Are you okay? Phew, the train have not left yet!" My face was blank, with no emotions, with no compassion, and with no concerns. He started speaking to me. "I don't have much time. I'm living in a borrowed time. If today is my last day on Earth, I want to leave something behind" He grabbed my hand. I was surprised and was caught off guard. He handed me an object. I didn't know what it was. It feels like glass. Kind of bumpy. A bracelet? Tick tock, tick tock, and then I heard it. It was a watch. Despite all of the disturbances in the background, I was able to depict the tick tocks. I asked him, "Out of all of these people, why did you gave it to me?" He replied, "Because I think this will help you manage your time. Time is precious miss, don't waste any minute of it sitting here on this bench." I don't know what happened but at that moment, I felt like this is what I've been looking for. Other might not understand why this watch meant so much to me. It's just a watch right? Yes, it is just a watch...but the hidden meaning behind it, and the tick tocks made me feel alive, more than ever.

From that day, I wore the watch every day. I realized even darkness can be beautiful. It never occur to me that light was so close. All I had to do was lived my life just like any other normal human beings out there. I might be born in darkness, but the world I lived in is beautiful. The sounds surrounding me means so much more than to an average person. The sounds is what makes me feel alive. The sound of a watch had saved me.

To a person like me who cannot see the beauty in this world, can hear, smell, taste and feel the beauty of life. This kind stranger had given me so much more than "borrowed time".  I'm not the only one out there who felt that way and to this day, I still want to thank that man with all my heart. He taught me that I should appreciate my life, for what's given to me.

"The clock won't stop. Not for me. Not for you. When the final tick tocks
and you are forever silenced, what will be most important is how loud that silence will be."
